Boniface Ushie, Ph.D.

Boniface holds a Ph.D in sociology and has vast research and leadership experience built over several years’ career in research and evaluation in sexual and reproductive health. He has led research, advocacy, and policy engagement projects across several African countries, including Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Uganda, and Zambia. His career trajectory has also been signposted by time in academia as a faculty member in the Institute of Child and Maternal Health  at the University of Ibadan. In the international development space, Boniface previously served as the Director of Research at the British Council, Nigeria. Boniface has a deep commitment to intersectional human rights, demonstrated in the programs he has worked on over the years. Boniface has outstanding experience conducting research and evaluations to improve access to safe abortion by focusing on health system preparedness to provide comprehensive abortion care. Other areas of focus include access to comprehensive sexuality education, addressing the root causes of marginalization and exclusion of sexual and gender minorities (e.g., LGBTQI+); sexual and gender-based violence and violence against children. Boniface has previous experience leading studies using the political economy analysis approach focusing on LGBTIQ+ (Kenya), comprehensive sexuality education (Malawi), and access to safe abortion (Zambia). He has managed several donor-funded projects and interfaced with donor representatives of the Ford Foundation, Hewlett Foundation, Children Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), and Susan and Thompson Buffett Foundation, among others.
